Context
At CES 2022, we announced our all-new Health Station, Body Scan. I had the opportunity to lead the design on a breakthrough feature called Segmental Analysis. Segmental Analysis takes standard Body Composition a step further by telling users the muscle and fat of each of their limbs and torso.
As segmental body composition was one of the major features for our most premium scale, we knew early on that we wanted to create something that would compliment the high calibre design and spec of the hardware. It would need to capture the user’s attention in product marketing and be a feature that people would want to frequently use. As this was a layer deeper than the regular body composition that all of our scales offer, we didn’t want to use yet another line chart in an app that at the time was 70% line charts.

Once users have installed their Body Scan they are presented with a series of tutorials to learn and activate various health features. During the segmental tutorial, users learn how to perform an accurate measurement and also have the opportunity to choose one of three models as a vessel for their results (man-type, woman-type and neutral).

Body Composition at Every Level
Following the fat percentage within the torso can be an excellent indicator of visceral fat (the dangerous fat that gathers around your organs) and can be used to prevent chronic conditions like diabetes. By following the amount of muscle in each limb, users can identify imbalances that are often caused by injury or from over-targeting the same segment during strength training.
